One of the most common questions we get is: “What do I need to run the FAT Timer app?” The good news is you probably already have what you need—or can get started for less than you’d expect.

Our Recommendation: The Base Model iPad

For the best FAT timing experience, we recommend the base model iPad (currently the 10th generation). Here’s why:

  • Affordable — A fraction of what traditional FAT systems cost
  • Supports 240fps video — Essential for precision timing at the finish line
  • Large display — Makes it easy to review finish line footage and mark times accurately
  • Long battery life — Lasts through a full meet on a single charge

You don’t need the iPad Pro or iPad Air. The standard iPad has everything you need to capture professional-quality finish line video. You can get them even cheaper used or refurbished.

The standard iPad really is the best deal around when it comes to a quality slow motion video camera.

iPhones Work Too

If you already have an iPhone with iOS 17 or later, you can absolutely use the FAT Timer app. The only downside is the smaller screen, which can make frame-by-frame scrubbing and time marking a bit more fiddly.

For occasional use or smaller meets, an iPhone is perfectly fine. But if you’re timing regularly, the iPad’s larger display is worth the investment.

What About Android?

The FAT Timer app is iOS only — Android is not currently supported. If you’d like to see an Android version in the future, let us know at [email protected]. We’re always listening to what our users need.

Based on the research we’ve done, we cannot find a quality name brand Android tablet that can match the resolution and frame rate of a base model iPad.

Wireless Microphone for Sound-Activated Starts

Want to start races wirelessly? A wireless lapel microphone lets the FAT Timer detect the starter’s gun from anywhere on the track.

New FAT Export subscribers get a free pre-modified wireless mic shipped directly to them! If you prefer to buy your own, your mileage may vary based on models - they do not all have the same range. We’ve tested several and for now are sticking with this Mini Mic Pro - It is easy to modify and has great range when properly oriented and elevated. (see tips below)

We’ve put together a guide on how to modify the mic for reliable performance in loud environments:

Pro Tips

Proper microphone positioning is key for the most reliable results:

  1. Use a tripod to get it a good 7ft in the air, over everyone’s heads. You can attach a wooden dowel, fiberglass rod, tent-pole or anything you like to a tripod to make it taller.
  2. Orient the microphone vertically with the mic end facing down. This puts the internal antenna int he best orientation for maximum range.
  3. Make sure the starter keeps the gun within a few feet. If they use a .22, keep it within 4-5 feet or less. If using a .38 pistol, then within 8-10ft should be ok. TEST IT OUT before a meet.

If you do these things, you should have consistent performance and your mic should have no issues reaching across a football field to the 200m start.
